The mind is incredibly powerful and at the same time incredibly gullible, in that we can, in a sense, trick it (sometimes more than reason with it). The loneliness "thought" has a loneliness chemical cascade that follows and gives us that feeling in our body (mine at least). What I have done is (probably a fairly typical "male" thing to to; I find distraction. A walk, a run, bike, read, watch a movie (usually very effective as I lose myself and focus on the action on the screen) and other little chores like dishes, laundry, etc. I can honestly say that there are times I feel odd/bad that I am "distracting" myself, and then realize that the distraction has pulled me from the vortex of lonely thoughts pulling me in.
